At UWest, we believe in educating the whole person. We were founded in 1991 as an alternative to the conventional university experience, integrating liberal arts traditions with a global perspective and drawing from Buddhist wisdom to create a community of collaboration and cooperation. Our graduates meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and globally interdependent world with creativity and compassion.

We are a community committed to learning with, from, and on behalf of others. UWest students seize the opportunity to develop their personal values and determine a personalized path to academic success. We think your education should be as unique as you.

reciprocal teachingReciprocal teaching refers to an activity in which students become the teacher in small group discussions. Students learn to be the "teacher" by helping each other clarify and predict what is in a textbook and by asking and answering questions of their peers.

Teachers help students learn by guiding group discussions using four strategies: summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and predicting. Once students have learned the strategies, they take turns assuming the role of a teacher in leading a dialogue about what has been read.

Reciprocal Teaching encourages students to think about their own thought process during reading. It helps students to learn to be actively involved and monitor their comprehension as they read.
